The High School Metal Club began 8 years ago at Westview High School in Beaverton, Oregon. Two teachers started the after-school Metal Club to connect with students who share a love and appreciation for heavy/punk/underground music, and to provide a safe place and voice for those without one in a rather large, suburban, public high school. The club immediately received support from local bands and artists and took off from there. Local bands such as Red Fang and Black Elk lent their support in the form of personal visits and band swag. Other local bands such as YOB, Raw Nerves, The Odious, Holy Illuminated Man of God, and Sisyphean Conscience (among many, many others) lent their support in the form of playing live music at the high school. This annual concert has become a tradition for high school students in the Beaverton School District as it is the only all-ages Metal show in the city.
Four years ago the Metal Club doubled in size and a chapter began at Health and Science High School. The Metal Club t-shirt fundraiser is the way we raise all needed funds to operate for the school year. We do not receive any financial support from the schools, and to be totally honest, we do not ask for it. We prefer to do it ourselves. Our fundraiser allows us to do many things we wouldn't otherwise be able to do. One year we took a "field trip"to downtown Portland for pizza and a Red Fang concert. It was an amazing experience as Red Fang did multiple shout-outs to the Club during the concert!
We rely on Metal-heads and Metal Club supporters from around the country to help us. 100% of the proceeds from shirt sales are split 50/50 between the two clubs. We also rely on you to help us spread the word about this fundraiser, and we thank you for all of your support. It means a lot to all of us.
Lastly, we would be remiss if we didn't give a Metal Club shout out to Nigel Barnes! He has donated MANY hours of his personal time to create all of the the hand-drawn artwork you have seen on our t-shirts throughout the years. He does it not for the recognition, but rather out of the goodness of his heart and desire to support the young Metalheads. A HUGE horns up to Nigel Barnes, a true Metalhead.
